GAMSAT Mindset - How to Stay Motivated

Welcome back to Wednesday Wisdom - your weekly dose of GAMSAT study tips and advice.

With GAMSAT results being released yesterday, I thought it would be a good time to focus on how to keep going when things don't go your way.

The first step, of course, is with a cheesy motivational quote...

How to stay motivated and keep going

Unfortunately every step of this path we've chosen is hard from here on out.

In my GAMSAT prep I distinctly remember feeling like I had made progress for the first time, only to do a set of questions and score the worst I had ever done.

Just last week, I performed horrendously on an OSCE and almost certainly failed that assessment.

Disappointing results are common, and it is important to stay motivated when they happen. Here are my top tips:

  1. Take some time - take a break and distance yourself from it. A week or two off isn't going to have a massive impact.

  2. Remind yourself of your goals - why are you doing this in the first place? Nothing worth doing is easy.

  3. Reflect and plan - when you're ready, really think about what went wrong. Was there a pattern to the types of problems you struggled with? Did they remind you of any ACER ones? How did you solve these? Create a plan to fill these gaps and execute - a plan is empowering.

So if you didn't get the result you wanted yesterday, just know it isn't the end.

You will have bumps in your GAMSAT journey and it's important to be able to stay motivated when things get hard.
